Floating Staircases
Unit 11, Denholme Business Centre, Halifax Road, Denholme, Bradford, West Yorkshire, BD13 4EN
A full cantilever staircase with dark steel treads, lit from the wall so each tread throws its own shadow. The visual effect depends entirely on what is hidden: a steel spine built into the wall, with individual stub arms projecting out to carry every tread independently.
Getting this right is a structural exercise before it is a decorative one. The wall has to be capable of taking the load, and the steelwork has to be built in before the wall is closed up and decorated. We surveyed before pricing, established what the wall was actually made of, and set the stringer accordingly.
There is no visible fixing anywhere on the flight. Every connection is behind the plaster line, which is the whole point of a cantilever stair and the reason it cannot be retro-fitted to a finished wall.
