Floating Staircases
Unit 11, Denholme Business Centre, Halifax Road, Denholme, Bradford, West Yorkshire, BD13 4EN
Solid oak treads cantilevered from a plastered wall in a domestic hallway. The oak is the part you see and the part people comment on, but it is a finish wrapped around a steel structure — each tread is bolted to a steel arm coming out of a stringer buried in the wall.
Oak is the most requested finish we fit on cantilever stairs. It suits period and modern properties equally, it wears well, and it can be sanded and re-oiled years later without touching the structure underneath.
Domestic stairs are governed by Approved Document K. On an open-riser flight the gap between treads must not allow a 100mm sphere to pass, and guarding is required where there is a drop. We design to this as standard rather than treating it as an afterthought.
