Access steelwork that will not get flagged

Industrial access steelwork has a harder job than a domestic stair. It gets used constantly, often by people carrying things, sometimes in poor light, and it gets inspected by people whose job is to find fault with it. We build it accordingly.

We fabricate and install mezzanine access stairs, plant and machinery access platforms, walkways and gantries, ladder and cage systems, loading bay steps, and handrail and guarding systems throughout factories, warehouses, mills and commercial units.

What we build to

Workplace access stairs sit under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations and, in most cases, Approved Document K. In practice the things that get picked up on inspection are consistent:

• Guarding on both sides of any flight where a fall is possible, at the correct height
• Handrails that are continuous and graspable, and that extend beyond the top and bottom step
• Consistent rise and going — the single most common cause of trips
• Non-slip treads, in a finish appropriate to what is on the floor: open mesh where there is oil or swarf, chequer plate where there is not
• Toe boards on elevated walkways and platforms
• Adequate landing sizes where a door opens onto the stair

Working around production

Most of our industrial work happens in buildings that cannot stop. We are used to it. We fabricate off site so that the on-site element is as short as possible, we work evenings and weekends where a shutdown is unavoidable, and our fitters hold CSCS cards and work to the standards our CHAS accreditation is assessed against.

If you need RAMS, insurance certificates or accreditation evidence before we can come on site, ask and we will send them straight over — we have them ready because we are asked for them constantly.

Finishes

Galvanised is the standard for anything external or in a wet environment. Internally, powder coating to a RAL colour is common — safety yellow for handrails and guarding is frequently specified, and we can match existing plant colours. Open mesh, chequer plate, solid plate and durbar tread options are all available.

Where we work

We cover the industrial estates of Keighley, Bradford, Leeds, Halifax, Huddersfield, Skipton and Burnley daily, and take on larger commercial and industrial contracts nationally.
