Chequer plate is the workhorse tread finish for anything that has to take boots, tools and traffic. The raised pattern gives grip without an applied coating that can wear off, and it can be hosed down. On an external or industrial spiral it is usually the right answer.
Spiral versus helical
A spiral stair winds around a central column; a helical stair curves without one. A spiral is more compact and considerably cheaper, which is why it is the common choice for plant access and secondary escape routes. A helical is the one people specify when the staircase is meant to be looked at.
